Welcome to the Swan Centre – ‘SOARING’!
We offer a comprehensive work experience programme in order to develop an understanding of the world of work. We have an extensive menu of placement in various sectors including cleaning, catering, hospitality, admin, retail and construction. We also have opportunities to learn work related skills within our social enterprise business, including two charity shops (West Lea in the Green and West Lea in the Town), West Lea Coffee Cart and our online eBay shop.
Our 'Supported Internship' programme is all about bridging the gap between school and the world of work. For those pupils who benefit, a supported Internship will involve structured education for one day a week supporting work related learning and four days in the workplace.
The Supported Internship Programme (SIP) is part of a national strategy to provide access to paid employment for young people with additional needs. During our pilot year the programme was inspected by OFSTED and was recognised as Good, which in Ofsted’s words is very rare for a new provision. After the successes of last year’s programme we have grown our team. We welcome new Jobs Coaches, Teachers and other Support staff, meaning that we can continue to provide holistic support including an engaging and relevant curriculum as well as high quality placements with a range of employers.
I’m ‘Soaring’ and learning how to:
Be more confident, prepare for exams, reach my potential, travel safely and independently, develop a career, find my place in the world of work, develop resilience and a work ethic, make choices for my life, take advantage of my opportunities, take my place in society, have great fun…I’m learning for life!
