From 3rd to 7th May, a group of students from West Lea School travelled to Cyprus to take part in an International Athletics Competition.
Our students were stunned by the awesome scale of the Ataturk Stadium in Lefkosa. We felt like tiny fish in a very big pond! However, this fired them up to do their best in participating in a range of track and field events. Their competitive spirit and their determined performances made the staff feel very proud! Individuals won gold, silver and bronze medals; we were especially impressed by the outstanding team spirit demonstrated by the girls’ relay team, who were awarded silver.
As well as the athletics competition, a packed programme included opportunities to enjoy the rich cultural experience of this beautiful country, visiting a local market, trying delicious foods and meeting a wide range of fellow competitors from different countries. Marshall was seen having fun with some of the young people in the stadium. When asked what he was doing, he informed us that they were playing a game of ‘It’ in Turkish – international relations in action!
Overall, the trip proved a wonderful sporting and educational opportunity for all involved.
